I visited a school in A Coruña (CEIP Fernández Latorre) some months ago, for an illustration workshop based on my character (and book series) Rodribico. There I was interviewed by two wonderful reporters, and here is the result.

Acaba de saír, por fin, unha obra en banda deseñada que publica Galaxia. Teño que dicir que, como todo o que se fai neste formato, deixa a un totalmente exhausto e esgotado...pero contento. Unha especie de baleiro post-partum é o que queda, porque a criatura demanda moito de un.

Trátase dunha historia de persoas (todas mulleres) que emigran dun lugar para outro, que deixan un pasado e se enfrontan a un futuro incerto. Unha visión poliédrica do concepto da "estranxeiría", ese termo que a todos nos pode afectar en calquera momento. E unha visión dende a perspectiva das que, neste mundo aínda tan lento, sofren do desprezo e da incomprensión.

Haberá varias presentacións, e este mércores 19 de outubro terá lugar a primeira, na Biblioteca Ánxel Casal de Santiago. Esta é unha invitación aberta.

A new work, a graphic novel, has just come to life, published by Galaxia. I must admit that works like this always make me exhausted, but finally happy and full. It's a story of immigration, of emigration, from the perspective of many women who suffer rejection and even abuse, with the eternal presence of that terrible term, 'foreigner'.

It will be presented newt Wednesday (March 19), at Biblioteca Ánxel Casal in Santiago. Come and see!!

Este curso pasado visitei, como fago habitualmente, centros e centros, para impartir obradoiros a rapaces, a profes, sobre a ilustración de libros, sobre a creación das novelas gráficas, e cousas similares. Acabo de descubrir un vídeo ben chusquiño que fixeron no IES Poeta Añón (en Outes) tras a miña visita. Moitas grazas a eles!

Last year I visited (as usual) many schools to speak about illustration, graphic novel, and similar things. I had a surprise when I found this video on IES Poeta Añón's website. It was a very nice experience, thank you, guys!

DÚAS PUBLICACIÓNS - Two new publications

Acaban de saír dous libros coa mesma editorial, Edicións Xerais: "O souto escuro e perigoso" (escrito por Miguel Vázquez Freire) e "Os reloxos preguiceiros de Néboa" (de Xavier Lama). Ambos traballos son verdadeiramente diferentes, por varios motivos. Un deles é un conto para nenos; o outro, aínda que tamén para público infantil, trátase dunha obra de teatro. As cores de "Os reloxos..." son cálidas, doces, reforzado todo isto pola elección (acertada, creo eu) por parte da editorial dun papel de cor crema; "O souto..." é un libro negro, si, pintado en branco integramente. Por que? porque é un libro de medo! E un libro sobre a Escuridade...e así pensei que tiña que ser.

Saen ao mercado xuntos, pero non revoltos. E, coma sempre, espero que gusten.

Two new books have just been published, both by "Edicións Xerais": "O souto escuro e perigoso" (somthing like "The dark dangerous forest", written by Miguel Vázquez Freire) and "Os reloxos preguiceiros de Néboa" ("The lazy clocks in Néboa", by Xavier Lama). They are absolutely different works, in many senses: one is a tale for children; and althought the other is also for children, it is a theatre play. The colours of "Os reloxos..." are warm, tender, and even more because the publishers have chosen a beige paper; "O souto" is a black book, yes, painted in white, completely. Why? Because it is a horror book! And about Darkness... and this is the way I thought it should be.

Edebé ha publicado la trilogía "La guerra de las brujas", de Maite Carranza. Y Rodeira ha decidido crear una plataforma online con la versión gallega de las obras, con actividades alrededor de los libros, y muchas más cosas. Aquí una muestra de una parte muy pequeña de lo que será (que será en muy, muy breve).

A pesar do parón informativo, un segue a traballar arreo, aínda que iso non sempre coincida con saídas ao público (os tempos editoriais son algo máis lentos). Aquí vai un anticipo dun libro que escribiu a miña querida amiga María Solar (escritora, presentadora da RTVG, actriz de dobraxe, e mil cousas máis) sobre os nenos que nacen (coa editorial Galaxia). Precioso acercamento á visión que unha nena ten do nacemento dun irmán. Non é a primeira vez que María e eu colaboramos, posto que xa traballaramos xuntos noutros dous proxectos con Baía Edicións ("Boa Sorte" e "O tempo do revés"), e desta volta volvín deixarme levar pola frescura das súas historias. Non tardará en saír á luz. Prometo avisar.In spite of the informative silence, I go on working and working. The point is that the publihers' tempo is not so fast sometimes. Here is an advance of a book written by a friend of mine: María Solar (TV presentar, writer, dubbing actress and many more things). Os "desbordamentos" - "Overflowings"

Comentaba un amigo (ou amiga) nun comentario a un post, algo máis abaixo, a "inutilidade" da ilustración (quizais esa palabra é demasiado forte pola miña parte) cando o texto xa di o que sucede, xa describe o que se ve, e xa é abondo para crear mundos. Eu coincido. Pero coincido no sentido de que a ilustración no debe repetir o que o texto di, sen máis. A imaxe non deixa de ser unha lectura, a do creador-ilustrador, que interpreta a obra do creador-escritor. Pero a imaxe, cando é feita tras o texto (e ben podería suceder todo vice versa), pode estendelo, amplificalo, crear submundos onde non os había (o onde non tiñan "por que non" existir). A imaxe pode, en fin, desbordar a historia inicial. Un exemplo real: un bo amigo, Paco Martín, escribiu un conto que me tocou ilustrar, "Sabeliña e os ratos". Durante o conto, un rato maquiavélico facía a puñeta á protagonista, e non levaba o seu merecido. Nas gardas, cando o texto estaba xa rematado, a historia veuse prolongada a través da imaxe. Podedes ver nas dúas dúas ilustracións a un gato que aparece durante o conto, e ao mesmo gato dándolle o seu merecido ao rato na garda final do libro.
One reader of this blog suggested below the uselessness of illustration considering that the text already says everything. I agree, but only in part. We cannot only draw what the text says. The image is another work, different from the text, and one can try an exercise of "overflowing", this is, making the story longer, wider, deeper, higher,... sometimes inventing all the possible worlds that the text does not deny. it happened to me one day, when I had to illustrate "Sabeliña e os ratos" ("Sabeliña and the mice"). The great Paco Martín wrote a story in which there was a naughty mouse in charge of bothering the protagonist once and again. The story finished and the mouse was safe and sound. I then decided to extend it in the final inside cover. A cat ate it!!! Here is the illustration of the cat during the tale, and the same cat at the end, after the textual story, once the book was (nearly) finished.

O Instituto Español en Lisboa, a través de Pilar Fraguío, gran amiga e antiga mestra do CEIP Vales Villamarín de Betanzos (a miña vila), convidounos a Miguel Vázquez Freire (outro amigo) e a min a impartir uns obradoiros de creación literaria e visual arredor do álbum infantil ilustrado. Tras una semana de un trabajo intenso, hemos terminado el curso de ilustración infantil para ilustradores nigerianos. La experiencia ha sido especialmente grata, no sólo por (y gracias a) la inmejorable cobertura de los servicios culturales de la Embajada de España (especialmente con el toque mágico de Eva Barta y Mónica Domínguez), sino por el encuentro mismo entre creadores. En mi trabajo como profesor del curso me he encontrado con un enorme talento frente a mí, a gente con ideas en ocasiones brillantes, que me aportó un fabuloso feedback. Pero además, al curso asistieron también varios escritores, lo cual nos dio juego para realizar actividades de ilustración casi instantánea sobre microrrelatos creados allí mismo, o experiencias tan enriquecedoras como la "ilustración" de un dibujo previo a través de un texto escrito. También hablamos y hablamos de la necesidad de crear una asociación profesional de ilustradores en Nigeria (cuyos trámites ya han iniciado), y ahora es el momento en que ilustradores, editores, escritores, y medios de comunicación se tienen que poner a dar el impulso que la literatura infantil necesita en Nigeria.
After a wonderful intensive week, we have finally finished the workshop about children's books illustration in Abuja, Nigeria, for local illustrators. The experience has been particularly positive, and not only because of the great work carried out by the cultural services of the Spanish Embassy (thank you, Eva Barta and Mónica Domínguez, the soul of it all), but also because of the encounter among creators. it was great for me to have so much feedback from the participants. Besides, we had some writers together with the illustrators, and that allowed us to put into practice some interesting activities: illustrating texts written on the spot, and also "illustrating" illustrations with texts. We also spoke once and again about the necessity to create a professional association of illustrators in Nigeria (they have already started with it), and now it's the moment for editors, illustrators, writers, and mass media to start work in favour of children's literature.

He comenzado el curso de ilustración infantil para ilustradores nigerianos, y la primera impresión ha sido fantástica: además de la calidad de los participantes (alguno de ellos ilustradores de libros infantiles con cierto recorrido ya), he comprobado que también hay en ellos un enorme entusiasmo por contar historias. Pues a eso estamos: no sólo a dibujar, sino principalmente a contar historias con imágenes, a narrar sin palabras, y a comunicar más allá de los textos. I've started the course on children's books illustration, for Nigerian illustrators, and my first impression has been fantastic: not only because of their quality, but also because of their interest in tellin stories with images. Hoy comienzo una aventura en África. La embajada de España en Abuja, la capital de Nigeria, me ha invitado a impartir un curso de ilustración de libros infantiles a ilustradores locales. Desde que me lo comunicaron he sentido una mezcla de emoción y responsabilidad, por tener que hacer de canal para otros profesionales hacia un medio artístico y de comunicación tan, tan serio e importante. Lo bueno es que veremos cientos de ejemplos, realizaremos mucho debate, muchísima práctica, y todos (yo el primero) aprenderemos a hacer nuestro trabajo un poquito mejor. Durante la estancia (de una semana) iré subiendo fotos de la aventura al blog. Me voy, que pierdo el avión!!!
Today I set out for Africa. The Spanish Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, invited me to give a course on children¡s books illustration, for local illustrators. I really have a mixture of feelings: emotion and loads of responsability. This is because I have to be a bridge between other professionals and such an important art and means of communication as illustration is. The good thing is that we'll see hundreds of examples, we'll discuss a lot, and we'll do much practice. And we all (me the first) will learn to make our make a bit better. Un novo libro sairá en breve, publicado pola editorial Galaxia. A autora é xa unha vella compañeira de libros, Araceli Gonda, quen xa no seu día escribira "Flis-fli-ris-flás", e que tiven a honra de ilustrar. Desta volta chegoume un conto que me inspirou, de primeiras, frescura, dinamismo, e un certo aire de busca, de procura, e de coñecemento final. Santi quere ter amigos, pero non sempre atopa o axeitado. A técnica baseouse nesta frescura e variedade: feito integramente a man, con lapis de cores e algo de acrílico, sobre papeis de cores tamén diferentes para cada páxina. Saírá publicado axiña.A new book will be published soon, by Galaxia publishers (Galicia-Spain). The author is an old book-friend, Araceli Gonda, as I had the opportunity to illustrate another of her books, "Flis-fli-ris-flás". This time the text they sent to me was a fresh story, with the dynamism of a quest. Santi, a little boy, is looking for a friend, but he doesn't always find the correct one. The technique? Well, it is based on the "soul" of the story: freshness and dynamism. Made completely by hand, pencils drew on coloured papers, each of them of a different tone, for each new double page. El trabajo de las guardas - The cover and the inside

Este libro contará con una cubierta troquelada, es decir, con un "agujero" que permitirá "asomarse" al interior, o sea, a la guarda. Pensé que esto podría tener posibilidades narrativas: y por ello decidí que la cubierta sería el interior de un camarote (que se prolonga en la contraportada). El "agujero" sería la ventana, que muestra lo que está en el exterior: un barco. Todo ello supone una invitación a abrir el libro, es decir, la ventana, a pasar la página, y ver que en el interior (bueno, el exterior) está un apetecible barco al que abordar. Aquí os va la imagen de la cubierta y de lo que veríamos al "abrir" la ventana.

This book has a cover with a die-cutting, this is, a hole which will let you see inside. I thought this could have narrative possibilities, and then I decided the following: the cover would be a ship cabin (the captain's), extended on the back cover. Then the "hole" would be the window outside, and also an invitation to open the book, this is to open the window, and see inside (well, actually outside). And through the window we can see a ship we feel like boarding. Here is a picture of the cover and what we can see once we open it.

Hace meses recibí la invitación de la revista de diseño e ilustración china DPI Magazine (aquí su página web), de Taiwán. Hicieron para el número de marzo un reportaje sobre mi trabajo, básicamente ilustración infantil, aunque también cómic, y otras disciplinas, con una extensa entrevista en chino e inglés. Fue una auténtica sorpresa, y una grata colaboración, puesto que la editora, Chiamin Liu, fue toda una lección de profesionalidad, enviándome pruebas, cotejándolo todo conmigo, y pidiendo en todo momento mi opinión sobre el diseño, el texto,... Un placer! Aquí os muestro las dos primeras páginas de la revista.

Some months ago I received an invitation from the Chinese magazine DPI, from Taiwan (although the magazine is printed on paper, they also have a website, here). The made a report on my work, mainly focusing on children's illustration and graphic novel, with an extense interview in Chinese and English. It was a nice surprise, and I honestly must say that the cooperation was phantastic. Chiamin Liu, the editor, was an example of being professional, sending my layouts, asking for my opinion at every moment, ... A really pleasure! Here you can see the first two pages of the magazine.

Acabo de terminar este libro para Edicións Xerais. Lo escribe mi amigo Miguel Vázquez Freire, y supone una ruptura en mi habitual línea gráfica: Blanco sobre negro. Una historia de miedo, de miedo visceral, de auténtico pavor hacia fuerzas casi telúricas y ancestrales. Pensé que el blanco y el negro juntos expresan a la perfección el juego de contrastes. Saldrá publicado muy muy pronto.

I've just finished this book for Edicións Xerais (Galicia - Spain). My friend Miguel Vázquez Freire wrote it, and it means an absolute change with my usual graphic style: white on black. A horror story, a ancestral fear, with the presence of characters with no soul, threatening the innocent pure protagonist. I thought black and white together can express the game of contrasts perfectly. It will be published very, very soon.

Aproveché con este libro para experimentar con las posibilidades del libro ilustrado: el uso de las guardas. En la guarda final, y dado que se trata de un libro de relatos sobre piratas, corsarios, barcos y batallas, me pareció oportuno hacer una imagen que mezclase la realidad y la ficción, y que tuviese una intención recapituladora: un cofre, resultado de un naufragio (quizá el agotamiento del ilustrador tras todo el trabajo?:), del que caen los bocetos a lápiz de las ilustraciones que se pueden ver a lo largo de todo el libro.

There are some advantages when drawing an illustrated book: the insides of the covers may supply much extra information. On this book (pirates, crimes, battles, ships,...) I thought it interesting to mix up reality and fiction, with a summarising intention: a vault, after a supposed shipwreck (maybe symbolising the exhausted illustrated after so much work), is open, and from it hang many papers, on the sand, with the real pencil sketches of the illustrations that appear all along the book, inside.

Para este libro utilicé mi particular técnica de ilustración que va del lápiz, pasando por las texturas integradas por ordenador, al acabado con pinceladas de tableta gráfica y Photoshop. Un ejemplo de un temible pirata.

For this book I used my particular drawing technique: first pencil, then textures integrated by computer, and finally paintbrush strokes on the digital tablet and photoshop. An example here of a terrible pirate.

Este libro (escrito por Araceli Gonda) foi publicado o ano pasado pola editorial Galaxia, en tapa branda, e acompañaba a unha obra de teatro, un CDRom multimedia e un libro para pais e nais. Ben. Agora Galaxia vén de publicar unha edición máis "deluxe", con tapa dura. Aquí unha mostra.

This book (written by Araceli Gonda) was published last year by Galaxia (Galicia - Spain), in soft cover, and it was distributed together with a theatre play, a multimedia CDRom and a book for parents. Now Galaxia has just published a better edition, in hard cover. Here is a sample.

Xerais acaba de publicar un libro de texto de historia da Filosofía para Bacharelato para o que fixen unhas ilustracións de cabeceira (para cada unidade). As indicacións do meu polifacético amigo Miguel Vázquez Freire (que ademais de todo é profesor de Filosofía e coautor neste libro) foron a principal guía: rapaces e rapazas de diferentes épocas falan do seu tempo, dos seus pensadores.

Xerais editing House (Galicia - Spain) has just released a textbook for the subject of History of Philosophy. I made some illustrations for it (for each chapter), and I followed the indications my friend Vázquez Freire gave me (a writer, a teacher, an analist, a philosopher,...): groups of youngsters from different historical periods speak about their times, their thinkers.

Los errores del ilustrador - The illustrator's mistakes

Si tuviésemos que describir cuál es la misión del ilustrador en una obra eminentemente ilustrada, las posibilidades serían muchísimas (crear arte, comunicar, no ir en contra del texto, hacer reflexionar, crear empatía con el lector, ...). Pero a veces ocurren deslices, como éste que me sucedió a mí. Menos mal que existen maquetadores que hacen bien su trabajo y no sóo maquetan, sino que revisan la coherencia de la obra al completo. Aquí va el objeto del delito, de la obra "Xurxiño quere ser...", de Miguel Vázquez Freire, editado por Baía. En la primera imagen hay una incorrección: por despiste (typical me) el niño se lava las manos, no está la madre, y no se baña. ¡Contradiciendo al texto!! En la segunda imagen está corregido. Una cosa tengo clara: los ilustradores tenemos que hacer OTRA obra diferente al texto, ampliar escenarios, introducir incluso nuevas realidades, hacer nuevas preguntas... Pero caminando de la mano de la otra obra, el texto. Gracias, Toni, de Baía.

If we had to describe what the illustration's mission is on a children's album (abundantly illustrated), the answers would be many: to create a piece of art, to communicate, not to contradict the text, make the reader think, establish some empathy with the public... But sometimes there are mistakesm like the one I had. Thank god there are designers at some editing houses who do not only care about design, but also about the global coherence of the project.. The book is "Xurxiño quere ser..." ("Xurxiño wants to be..."), written by Miguel Vázquez Freire and edited by Baía. On the first image there is a mistake: the boy is not in the bath, and the mother (she should be there) is not. It was saying the opposite from the text!! There is something I know for sure: ilustrators must make ANOTHER work, different from the text, introduce some new realitites, make new questions... But walking hnd by hand with the written text. EL GRAN LIBRO DE RELATOS DE PIRATAS Y CORSARIOS

Éste es mi proyecto, hasta el momento, más internacional. Fue un encargo de Parramón, en Barcelona, y está pensado principalmente para el mercado español de aquí mismo y de Latinoamérica. También saldrá en catalán, en inglés (ya ha sido comprado en Estados Unidos), y haber a dónde llega, porque todavía está en imprenta. Supuso para mí un verano a todo gas (el pasado), con un enorme trabajo de documentación en cuanto a piratas, barcos, vestimentas, armas, etc. pero también porque tuve que cambiar radicalmente mi tono habitual: ahora hacía falta más realismo, porque la obra está a camino entre lo infantil y lo juvenil. Aún así, disfruté muchísimo. El libro se publicará en marzo, así que ya iré contando cosillas, enseñando bocetos, y más secretos. De momento, unas muestras.

This is my most international project. It was edited by parramón, in Barcelona, and it was intended mainly for the Spanish market in Spain and Latin America, although it will also be published in Catalonian, in English (it has been bought in the USA), and who knows where else, because it is still being printed. it meant for me a busy summer, with hard work with documentaiton, clothes, pirates, weapons, ships, and so on. And I also had to change my usual style: not so childish, and more realistic, for an audience who are not children, but young people. I will show more things when the publishing dates is closer (MARCH)

Este é o proxecto que sempre soñei: unha colección de dez libros para nenos moi pequeno, prelectores e primeiros lectores. A idea orixinal foi de Manuel Guisande (si, o de La Voz de Galicia, o do famoso blog), e xuntos escribimos os textos. Un inocente paxariño, Rodribico, sae ao mundo...e ten que coñecelo todo. Irei amosando aquí o proceso de creación dos dez libros. De momento, estas son imaxes do primeiro. En xuño estarán todos feitos (si, si, todos), e listos para ler.

This is the project I've always dreamt of: a collection of ten books for young children. The original idea is Manuel Guisande's (yes, the one from the famous blog, in La Voz de Galicia newspaper), and we two wrote the texts. An innocent bird, Rodribico, is born to the world...and he must learn everything. I will show images of the whole process. And it will all come out next June.

Outro libro. Con outro amigo. Miguel Vázquez Freire é un toque de calidade aos proxectos. Rigor, esixencia, e un auténtico estímulo para traballar con el. Este proxecto, tamén con Baía Edicións, pedía un deseño limpo, no que as páxinas respirasen, e dialogasen co texto. Por outra banda, decidín que os personaxes tivesen certo manierismo ou deformamento que rozase a loucura. Esas curvas esaxeradas permitirían un xogo maior cos textos, que non deixan de ser elementos tamén visuais. Sairá tamén en breve á luz.

Another book. With another friend. Miguel Vázquez Freire is a touch of quality for projects. he is rigurous and very demanding (especially with himself). He is a real simulus to work with. And again with Baía Edicións. The project needed a clean design, where the pages could breathe and establish a dialogue with the text. On the other hand, I decided to draw crazy characters, with unreal shapes, with curves and lines that allowed me to play with the paragraphs (also visual elements). It wil come out soon, very soon.

UN NOVO LIBRO - A NEW BOOK

Sempre que traballo con Baía Edicións teño a sensación que de me saen ás. Digo isto porque teñen a sana manía de deixarme as mans sempre libres ante os proxectos. E iso é un perigo para un creador. Desta volta metinme nun proxecto co meu amigo (e sen embargo co-creador) Arturo Iglesias (quen queira visitar o seu blogue, aquí).

Whenever I work for Baía Edicións I feel as if I had wings. I say so because they usually let me do whatever I want. And that is something dangerous to say to a creator. This time I got into a project with my friend (and however co-creator) Arturo Iglesias.

Na colección CEMPÉS, xa con Caroina e os caracois, pretendimos facer libros que tivesen aplicación nas aulas de infantil , de tal xeito que os nenos e nenas puidesen "contar" o conto da mesma maneira ca nós, é dicir, cos mesmos materiais, as mesmas técnicas. Primeiro foi o barro, e sabemos de moitos coles que levaron a cabo a experiencia con barro e plastilina. Agora, con este libro, ANTÓN, SI TAL!, tocoulle o turno ao COLLAGE.

With the colection CEMPÉS and the book Carolina e os Caracois (Carolina and the snails) we intended to make books which might have an application in children's classes, so that they could "tell" the tale the same way as us, with the same materials and techniques. First it was clay, and we know of some schools where they put ir into practice: they read the book and then they "told" it with clay and plasticine. Now, with this book, ANTÓN, SI TAL! (Antón, of course!), there came the turn for COLLAGE.

Para iso seguín a idea de que todo na vida cotiá pode server para facer arte, para crear beleza e, sobre todo, para contar historias. Nestas montaxes feitas a man hai de todo: sopa de estrelas, papel aluminio, tornillos, chapas de cerveza, fideuá, tea, paus de xeados,... e un longo etc. A editorial vai crear no seu espazo web unha sección de actividades que acompañen ao libro, con xoguiños e demais. Foi toda unha diversión realizar as montaxes, sobre todo porque pretendín que en cada imaxe houbese algo cotián, que os nenos puidesen recoñecer (unha moeda!!! un estropallo!!!), así que cada paso de páxina é un xogo, unha adiviña, un reto. E a historia, escrita por Arturo, combina a delicadeza literaria coa máis rigorosa pedagoxía (Arturo é escritor, si, pero tamén pedagogo, profesor, deseñador, ..): puro construtivismo. O libro sairá en breve, porque xa marchou para a imprenta.

My starting point was the idea that everything in everyday life is usefull to make art, to create ceauty and, mainly, to tell stories. On these handmade works there is everything: stars soup, aluminium planks, screws, beer lids, pasta, cloth, ice-cream sticks,...The editing house is going to create a section on their web site with games and activities around to book. It was real fun to create it all, because I tried to put someting in each page that the children could recognize as familiar. And the story, written by Arturo, apart from being literarilly delicate, is rigorously pedagogical (he is a pedagogue, a teacher, a graphic designer,..): PURE CONSTRUCTIVISM. The book will be released soon, because they are printing it right now.

Tras un período de silencio-agotamiento-vorágine creativa, me pongo las pilas para ir contando lo que ocurre por esta mi mesa de dibujo. En realidad todo tiene una explicación: pesa ya un quintal, tiene una risa que hipnotiza, y además se llama como yo, Tomás. Mi segundo hijo nació en mayo pasado y desde entonces mi casa se convritió en un manicomio. Ahora uno le va cogiendo el tranquillo al trabajo y la conciliación familiar. Menos mal!
After a long silent exhausting crazy period, I am back again, to tell everybody what's happening on my working desk. There really IS a reason: it already weighs a ton, a hypnotizing smile, and my own name, Tomás. My second son was born last May, and since then my house has become a nightmare. Now I'm beginning to catch up with everyhing, to put things in order...thank heaven!!

Seica este libro está a ter boa acollida entre a crítica (pódese ver aquí) e, máis importante aínda, entre os nenos e nenas. Aquí vai a imaxe que máis lle gusta á nai do texto, Yolanda Castaño, e o seu proceso de elaboración. Normalemente os nenos enfróntanse aos traballos cando xa están rematados, pero... onde comeza a arte realmente? Acaso o proceso (que normalmente non ven) non é parte dela?

This book is having good acceptance by critics and the media (click here), and (what is more important) by readers. Here are three samples of the process, exactly the image that Yolanda Castaño, the writer, likes most. Children normally face the book when it is finished, but... where does art really begin? Isn't the process itself part of it?

En breve comezaremos a promoción deste libro de Edicións Xerais. A autora do texto, Charo Pita, é todo un luxo para a obra, posto que, ademais de escritora, é actriz, contacontos, e ten unha voz lírica espectacular cando canta (dígoo porque fun testemuña en directo). Aproveitaremos que é toda unha meiga encantadora de nenos para presentar o libro. E comezaremos en xuño.
Very soon, we will start the promotion of the book "O arco da vella", edited by Edicións Xerais. The tale is an interpretation of the origins of the RAINBOW. The thing is that in Galician, it is called something like "The old lady's bow", and the tale Charo pita wrote for this book plays with the idea of an old woman, of course. We are lucky she is the writer, as she also acts and sings. The promotion will start in June.

A veces los materiales multimedia vienen en un cofre: el CD que los contiene (que puede contener muchas, muchas cosas) puede suponer un muro para visualizar el interior. Supone encender el equipo informático, meter el CD, arrancarlo, pasar de pantalla en pantalla... y muchas de las cosas que se hacen para ellos quedan a veces ocultas. Aquí van algunas pantallas del CDRom Flis-fli-ris-flás.

Sometimes multimedia materials are hidden in a vault. Yes, the CD where they come may be a barrier for the visitor, for the reader, as he has to switch on the computer, get the CD in, launch it,... and many of the images are only visible after a number os screens. Andamos a presentar o libro "Cando eu saiba ler" (Galaxia) en diferentes lugares de Galicia. Hai unha semana tocoulle á FNAC da Coruña, ante unha chea de nenos cos seus papás e mamás. Yolanda Castaño, autora do texto, fixo de mestra de cerimonias, lendo poemas, cautivando aos rapaces. E eu poñía imaxes, de maneira simultánea, ás súas palabras. "Dádeme un A!", increpaba ela. E eu debuxaba a unha parelliña de namorados e, con eles, en grande, "AMOR".
We are sort of moving the book "Cando eu saiba ler"(Galaxia) around Galicia. A week ago it was at FNAC A Coruña. A lot of children, with their parents. Yolanda Castaño, the author of the text, conducted the show, reading poems, and haunting the children. And, in the meantime, I was drawing what she was saying. "Bring me an A", she claimed, and then I drew a couple of lovers and the word "AMOR" (love).

Acaba de saír á luz un libro que escribiu Yolanda Castaño e que ilustrei eu, para Galaxia. Poesía para nenos que non saben aínda ler. Poesía para escoitar, para ler en voz alta, apra cantar, para engatusar. E, de fondo, as vogais. Teremos a primeira presentación pública da obra na FNAC da Coruña o sábado 25 de abril (a hora? pois aínda non a sei... confirmareino).

A new book has been released. It was written by Yolanda Castaño, and illustrated by me. The publisher, Galaxia. It's a book for children who cannot read yet. poestry to be listened to, to be read out loud, to be sung, to haunt. And everything with the five vowels! The first public presentation will take place in A Coruña, at FNAC, on April 25th (I do not still know the time, but I'll find out!)

Mural en Melide - Wall painting in Melide

A Xunta encargou a varias bibliotecas municipais galegas que, á súa vez, contactasen con ilustradores para elaborar unha ilustración mural nas súas dependencias. Eu traballo no IES Melide, e chamáronme da biblioteca municipal da vila. Aquí van os pasos de como está quedando o proxecto...que aínda non está rematado. Irei amosando o proceso ata que chegue ao final.

A superficie a ilustrar era unha secuencia de paredes ascendentes...e pensei en aproveitar a metáfora visual da subida, como símbolo da realización persoal: unha muller (en principio unha nena), debuxada a tamaño natural, vai subindo as escaleiras e medrando en cada tramo. Rodeándoa, os personaxes da literautra, as lecturas que a fan medrar como ser humano, ata entrar na biblioteca. Nun tramo que "pecha" o círculo, a muller, anciá, conta un conto á nena (ela mesma, si), co cal se conclúe que a arte nos fai ascender, e chega incluso a trascendernos.

The Xunta de Galicia told several municipal libraries to choose an illustrator to make a mural painting in their facilities. As I teach at Melide Highschool, they called me to do that work at melide Public Library. Here are some shots of the process (I haven't finished it yet!). As the surface consisted of three walls going up, I thought of drawing a metaphor of life: a woman (first a little girl) goes up, and she grows up as she walks up the stairs. Surrounding her, lots of fictional characters from the literature of all times (and places). Then, on a final little wall which "closes" the circle, the old lady tells a tale to the little girl (herself again), to represent that art overcomes us, and exists even beyond death.

Hai pouco rematei un proxecto para Edicións Xerais, un álbum infantil escrito por Charo Pita, contacontos, actriz, cantante, escritora,... puf, e moitas máis cousas. Vaise publicar en abril, pero aquí vai un adianto da parte gráfica.

A couple of weeks ago I finished a children's book written by Charo Pita (a storyteller, actress, singer, writer...and many more things!). It will be released in april, but here are some samples.

Feira do Libro de La Habana

Esta semana pasada regresamos da viaxe institucional á Feira do Libro de La Habana. Sobra dicir que a experiencia foi gratísima a nivel persoal, posto ía acompañado de xente fantástica. Pero a nivel profesional, Cuba resultou ser unha bocanada de aire fresco. Paradoxicamente, o país das limitacións supuxo para o grupo de persoas que alí estivemos un impacto emocional moi forte, e un encontro cunha xente ávida de lectura, de contacto co exterior, e, en definitiva, de ás para sobrevoar os edificios decadentes e o aire corrupto de carburante mal queimado. Como creador gráfico, aínda teño en mente os claroscuros daquela cidade, a vida que busca camiño entre a miseria, e, si, a felicidade que aínda así se respiraba.

Paco Martín e mais eu participamos en varias actividades arredor de "Sabeliña e os ratos", libro que el escribiu e eu ilustrei. Unha delas consistiu nunha demostración en vivo da ilustración dun fragmento (tamén o fixemos con "As cousas de Ramón Lamote"; aquí se pode ver todo o proceso en fotos). E con Anxos Sumai compartimos charlas e debate sobre a situación da literatura e da ilustración en Galicia. Un placer.

Last week we arrived from the institutional visit to Havana. Apart from the wonderful experience from the personal point of view (thanks to the wonderful people who went with me). But the professional aspect was also great, as Cuba turned out to be a breath of fresh air. Even though limitations are everywhere there, the emotional shock was intense for us all, an encounter with people eager to learn, to read, to see beyond the barriers. As a graphic creator, I must confess I still have that black and white image on my mind, that contrast between the nasty smell of smoke and the happiness overcoming everything.

Paco Martín and myself tokk part in several activities around "Sabeliña e os ratos", a book he wrote and I illustrated. One of them was a "live" illustration of some fragments (we also did it with "As cousas de Ramón Lamote"; the whole process may be seen here, in photos). And, together with Anxos Sumai, we three shared some speeches and debates about the situation of literature and illustration in Galicia. A fantastic experience.

Mañá mércores preséntase a banda deseñada que realicei apra a Comisión pola Recuperación da Memoria Histórica, titulada "Compañeiros". O acto terá lugar na Casa Museo Casares Quiroga, na Coruña, ás 10:30h. Estará no acto Manuel Rivas, que fará a presentación. Aquí van uns fragmentos da obra, que, aínda que breve (15 páxinas), relata uns acontecementos terribles e moi intensos... de aí a curta extensión. Aínda que a obra foi rematada hai tempo xa, relendo agora as páxinas, e pensando que mañá se presentará, quizais, ante familiares das vítimas que debuxei, volvo a sentir verdadeiro pesar e opresión. Quizais porque desta volta non era un traballo máis de ficción. Non se trataba dunha historia lonxana, distante, senón que se falaba de persoas reais que sufriron o indicible simplemente para poder desfrutar dun pouco de aire limpo. Espero que a obra sirva de homenaxe a esas persoas, e que, cando menos, lles restitúa parte da dignidade merecida e esquecida.

Here are some samples of the short story I will present tomorrow. It's going to take place at Casa Museo Casares Quiroga, A Coruña, at 10:30h, and Manuel Rivas will be there to give it his blessing. Although it's only 15 pages long, it relates the terrifying story of near a hundred people who tried to escape from Franco's regime, back in 1937. But they couldn't. And they were killed and tortured. Although the work was done some time ago, I now recall it, and re-reading the pages I can feel the opression again. Yes, real characters, real people, real people's parents and grandparents. And I had to draw them. I honestly hope my traces will give them back the dignity they lost once and again.

My sense of ethics has made me take this comic strip I had published on Tempos Novos magazine years ago, and...I'm so sad it is still so up-to-date.

A ver se o Martiño que debuxei se paece ao que representan os amigos da compañía Matapiollos. Por certo, seica aos nenos lles dá un medo moi rico a representación con luz negra.

Next weekend it's Cultur-Gal, the fair of editing houses and audiovisual firms, in A Coruña (at Palexco). I will take my son to see Flis-fli-ris-flás there, on Saturday. Existe unha heroína que evita os riscos, e vive nas viñetas dunha banda deseñada. O seu nome (o da heroína e da banda deseñada) é PREVENTIGIRL. Realizada para a Fundación de Estudios e Análises FESAN, e a propia Xunta de Galicia, pretende suxerir, de modo humorístico e esaxerado, o que se debe evitar para non sufrir as consecuencias dos riscos.

There is a heroine who avoids risks, e lives within a comic story. Her name is PREVENTIGIRL, and it was made for the Fundación de Estudios e Análises (FESAN) and the Xunta de Galicia. In a humouristic and hyperbolic way, it tries to teach students about the bad consequences of not preventing risks.

A Secretaría Xeral de Política Lingüística, xunto coa editorial Galaxia, veñen de publicar un material que anda circulando por concellos de Galicia: un pack que inclúe unha obra de teatro infantil (coa compañía Matapillos), e unha bolsa que reciben os nenos, na que hai un libro dobre (unha versión da obra teatral + un libro para pais, con recomendacións sobre animación lectora), e tamén un CDRom multimedia. Eu participei en todas as partes agás na obra de teatro. E no CD traballei, como non podía ser doutra maneira, co meu colega J.L. Orge, todo un mestre dos materiais multimedia. Aquí tedes unha imaxes do libro e do CDRom.

The Secretaría Xeral de Política Lingüística (Xunta de Galicia), and Galaxia Editors have released a product which is travelling around many towns and cities in Galicia: a pack with a theatre play for children (the company: Matapillos), and a bag that children receive, with a book (containing version of the play + another book for parents), and also a multimedia CDRom. I took part in all of them, except for the play. The technical part of the CDRom, together with the design, was my friend Orge's work, as usual.

Por fin!! Acabar un cómic, por corto que sea (éste tiene 16 páginas) es a-go-ta-dor. Supone tomar muchas decisiones (guión, montaje de páginas, recursos narrativos, tempo, planos, poses,......). Pero al fin está terminado. Su título es "COMPAÑEIROS: Homenaxe ás vítimas do Portiño". Este fin de semana será presentado en los 14ºs Encontros Luso-galaico-franceses do Livro Infantil e Juvenil de Porto, tanto los ejemplares impresos como una exposición de las planchas. Más adelante será presentado aquí, en Coruña, coincidiendo con el aniversario de la huída frustrada de O Portiño (allá por marzo). Aquí va un adelanto.
At last!!! Finishing a comic book, however short it is, is exhausting!! it implies taking so many decisions (script, setting up the page, narrative resources, timing, ...). But it is over. The title is Su título es "COMPAÑEIROS: Homenaxe ás vítimas do Portiño" (an homage to O Portiño vistims). It will be released next weekend, but not in spain, but in Port (14os Encontros Luso-galaico-franceses do Livro Infantil e Juvenil), both the magazines and an ehibition of all the pages. Llevo un tiempo trabajando en un material en cómic para Comisión para la Recuperación de la Memoria histórica d'A Coruña. Se trata de una historieta de 16 páginas que narra los hechos sucedidos en 1937 en O Portiño (A Coruña). Más de cien personas intentaban huír de la ciudad a territorio republicano (o simplemente hacia la vida). Y la huída fue frustrada, acabando en muertes, encarcelamientos, y posteriores ejecuciones. Un trabajo en el que, por primera vez, tengo que poner iámegens al dolor de muchas personas, cuyas familias viven hoy en día con el recuerdo de un pasado terrible. Aquí va una página del proceso, a lápiz. Saldrá publicado a mediados de noviembre, y se distribuirá a centros de seundaria.
I've been working some time on a project for the Comisión para la Recuperación de la Memoria histórica d'A Coruña. it's a comic "magazine" (16 pages) about some facts which happened in 1937: a hundred people planned to escape from the Fascist area (during the Spanish Civil War) by sea. But they couldn't. And it all ended up with killings, prison and executions. This was the first time for me in which I had to draw many people's pain and suffering. And this is a homage to the families of those who had no voice against so much injustice. Here is a pencil page. It will be released around the middle of november, and they will send it to Secondary schools.

The Xunta de Galicia asked me to draw a set of images for a visual dictionary. it is intended for inmigrant children, in Galician, and it deals with all the situations that a kid has to face on a normal school day. A Comisión pola Recuperacións da Memoria Histórica D'a Coruña está a organizar unhas xornadas de homenaxe aos guerrilleiros antifranquista, na zona de Betanzos, Mesía, Oza, Ordes,... Para a ocasión, encargáronme un cartaz que se centrase na figura de Foucellas, o mítico guerrilleiro. Tras escoitar cousas duns e outros sobre o personaxe, decidín ubicalo no monte (non podería ser doutra maneira), e taparlle os ollos, como símbolo deses claroscuros que sen dúbida tiña a súa personalidade e a súa propia vida.

The Comisión pola Recuperacións da Memoria Histórica D'a Coruña are organizing a sort of Conference on the Spanish guerrilla against the Franco regime, in the area of Betanzos, Mesía, Oza, Ordes (in A Coruña province, Spain). For the occasion they asked me to design a poster, using one of the most famous revolutioneers as a symbol: Foucellas. I placed him in the forest, ovbiously, but with a tiny branch covering his eyes, as a metaphor of the dark side of his personality and life.

Desde el Ayuntamiento de A Coruña se ha tomado la decisión de "ilustrar" su historia en los pilares del viaducto de San pedro de mezonzo. A mí me tocó la parte de la presencia romana, y opté por Julio César, ese tipo ambicioso que regresó a Roma rico para ascender en su carrera política. Hoy, casualmente, pasé con el coche por allí, y la gente del estudia Alavista estaban reproduciendo mi dibujo. Después de ver el resultado de las demás columnas, no queda más que felicitarlos por la calidad de su trabajo. En estas dos imágenes se puede ver mi dibujo original, y la reproducción a gran tamaño que están haciendo.

A Coruña City Hall has decided to illustrate the history of the city on the pilars of a bridge which goes over San pedro de Mezonzo roundabout, in the city centre. I was asked to draw the Roman part, and then Julius Caesar came to my mind (that ambitious guy who became rich here and went back to rome to get promoted in his political career). Today, by chance, I drove my car close to the place, and there they were! The people from Alavista studio were reproducing my image. I really congratulate them for their work, because one only has to see all the comuns to see thay are fantastic. on these pictures you can see my original drawing and the reproduction they made on the column.

Nesta ocasión quixen amosar un momento semi-onírico, unha especie de soño, nese preciso intre no que o globo de papel máis grande do mundo é lanzado, e o ruído atronador do xentío é apagado por unhas nubes que se apoderan da escena.

The Town Hall of my hometown (Betanzos - Galicia, Spain) asked me to draw the poster for the August festivities. This time I tried to show an oniric moment in which, after casting the biggest paper balloon in the world out to the sky, the terrible noise from the crowd is silenced by some clouds which turn up from nowhere.

Hace unas semanas acabé (por fin) mi primer álbum de cómic. Se titula TOLOS, y ya ha salido de la imprenta, editado por la Universidade da Coruña. Se presentará oficialmente en el Salón de Cómic VIÑETAS DESDE O ATLÁNTICO, el próximo martes 12 de agosto, a las 19:00h. en la sede de la Fundación Caixa Galicia (en los cantones, en A Coruña). Ese mismo día habrá por la mañana una rueda de prensa en la que coincidiré con Howard Cruse y Olivier Ka. Muestro aquí algunas planchas de la obra y un par de lápices. En el libro se pueden encontrar cuatro historias de corte intimista, bastante lírico diría yo, y un epílogo resolutorio. Además, una sección de "making off" y dos prólogos: el del Rector de la Universidade da Coruña y otro de Miguelanxo Prado. Además de la presentación del libro (que estará a la venta en las casetas del salón del cómic), habrá una exposición de originales y acabados en el edifio PALEXCO de A Coruña.
Some weeks ago I finished (at last) my first comic book. The title is "Tolos" (which in Galician means "Crazy" or "Crazy ones"). It's already been released, published by A Coruña University, and it will be officially presented next Tuesday 12th August, at 07:00 p.m. at Fundación Caixa Galicia (los cantones, A Coruña). That morning we'll talk to the press, together with Howard Cruse and Olivier Ka. Here you can see some pages, as well as some pencil sketches. The book may be found at the stands of the fair, and on it we can see four personal stories, with a touch of lyrism, and finally an epilogue which makes it come to an end. Then, a makaing-off section, and two prologues: one by A Coruña University Rector, and another by Miguelanxo Prado.

Por fin! Este venres 13 preséntanse os dous libros de Baía Edicións "Boasorte" e "O tempo do revés" que xa anunciei noutro post. Na imaxe pódense ver os datos (lugar, hora,...). Será un acto para nenos, posto que Santiago Pemán falará de curiosidades co tempo, de interpretar o signos da natureza. Jorge Mira contará anécdotas dos planetas (porque é físico). Vítor Fábregas (a ver... Tucho dos Tonechos) será o mestre de cerimonia. Porque os libros combinan literatura e ciencia. E estou seguro de que vai transmitir moi ben que a ciencia é algo divertido. O vindeiro mércores 18, ás 8 e media da tarde, inauguraremos en Melide a exposición itinerante "Tras o espello". Xa a tiven en Santiago e Corcubión (as fotos son de alí, de hoxe), e agora vai para o Concello onde dou clase. Estará até finais de xullo, no Edificio Multiusos.

Next Wednesday, 18th, at 8:30 p.m., we'll start my itinerary exhibition called "Behind the Mirror". It was in Santiago before, and then in Corcubión (these pictures were taken there today), and now it will go to the place where I teach, Melide. It may be visited at Edificio Multiusos.

Seguimos co "Making off". Aquí van unhas fotos máis do proceso, e unha proba de acabado (non definitiva, pero aproximada). Supoño que o logro final estará en que permaneza a frescura do barro, a madeira, etc., e que o retoque dixital colabore para reforzar as atmosferas.

Por certo: nunca pensei que pintaría tantos caracois na miña vida! O libro titúlase "Carolina e os caracois", e somos autores do texto Arturo Iglesias e un servidor.

Back again with the Making off. here are some snapshots of the process, and one picture of what one final art could be (although not definite). I guess the goal is to find a balance between the spontaneity of real amterials (clay, wood,...) and the atmospheres created by the computer later on. By the way: I'd never though I would paint so many snails in my whole life!! The title of the book is Carolina and the snails, and the authors are Arturo Iglesias and myself.

Un nuevo trabajo - A new work

Estoy realizando un trabajo para Baía Edicións. Se trata de un libro infantil, para los más pequeños (hasta 3 años). He decidido retomar los pinceles y algo más: barro, madera, piedra,... Y ahí estamos, cortando, modelando,...

Es divertido, pero muy, muy trabajoso. Y, por supuesto, no podría llevar a cabo un trabajo como éste sin contar con el increíble taller de un grabador como es el de mi padre, José Valentín. Allí estoy a mis anchas, con metros y metros de espacio, con mesas gigantescas, y otras auxiliares. Rodeado de las texturas que él usa para sus xilografías, y con absolutamente todo lo que puedo necesitar: gubias, maderas, telas, colas, acetatos, y cualquier cosa que pueda imaginar...una gozada!!.

Y como el proceso de trabajo es tan laborioso y pasa por tantas fases, he decidido realizar una especie de REALITY SHOW, o si se prefiere un MAKING OFF, mostrando fotografías del proceso. Y empiezo hoy. Al final de cada escena vendrá el ordenador, para retoques de luz, de tonalidades, e incluso para añadir algún elemento. En fin, aquí van algunas imágenes y una prueba.

I'm illustrating a book for Baía Edicións (for children under 3). I am facing brushes again, but not only that: clay, wood, stone,... it's real fun, but very very hard. And of course I couldn't do it without my father's workshop (José Valentín is an engraver). he's got everything I need: textures, cloth, even concrete!!). An as the process is so complicated, I've deided to show some of the steps through some pictures all along it. It will be a sort of MAKING OFF. At the end of the scenes there will be a computer to modify some lights, some colours. Here is the first post with some images.

Next Wednesday 4th, at 7:00 p.m., there will start an exhibition organised by the Coruña Press Association. The topic: the Spanish political transition seen by graphic humourists. Revista Galega de Educación

Cada vez que sae a Revista Galega de Educación, que edita Nova Escola Galega (da que son membro), realizo unha páxina de humor que titulo DOcENTES. Para os que non saiban galego, explico que DOENTE significa en español "enfermo", ou "tocado por algún mal". O caso é que nesa páxina trato de rirme da miña outra profesión (a de profesor), dos tics que acabamos collendo, e do ridículos que a veces podemos parecer cando non somos quen de dignificar o posto que temos na sociedade. Neste caso había que falar de transmisión oral e educación. E aquí está o resultado: boceto e acabado (facendo click na imaxe pódese ler o texto sen problemas)
Every time the magazine Revista Galega de educación (edited by Nova Escola Galega, of which I am a mamber), I draw a humour page with the word game DOcENTES (something about teachers and insane people). With that page I always try to laugh at ourselves (I teach at a secondary school), at all the manias we have every day, and especially at how ridiculous we may look when we are not able to assume how important our profession is for society. Si alguien pasa por la Costa da Morte durante estos quince días, está invitad@ a visitar mi exposición, que tengo en la Casa da Cultura de Corcubión. Se titula "Tras o espello", y ya estuvo antes en Santiago. Después irá para Arzúa (segunda quincena de junio), Melide (hasta finales de julio) y seguirá viajando (Muxía, Cee,...).

Recentemente tiven que facer un personaxe para unha empresa que impartirá formación aos seus traballadores. Para chegar a dar no cravo hai que facer normalmente probas: un tén un aire demasiado despistado ou desaliñado; outro parece excesivamente formal,... De súpeto hai algo nun deles que gusta a todos, e ese queda. Así se xestan os personaxes, probando, probando...

Recently I've had to create a character for a firm. It was intended to be used in some formation courses for the employees. To be able to find wht the client wants it0s necessary to try once and again: change his careless look; make him less formal,... Suddenly, something in him is good for everyone, and that's it! This is the way characters are created... trying and trying.

Inspiración - Inspiration

Cuando me metí en el proyecto de ilustrar "María é maior", de Baía edicións, escrito por Miguel Vázquez Freire, me planteé, como de costumbre, crearle una atmósfera única, un tono diferente a todos los demás libros. Digamos que había que crearle un ADN exclusivo. Y entonces me vino a la cabeza lo que ve mi hijo con frecuencia: POCOYÓ. Es un niño con sus coleguillas que actúa sobre un fondo diáfano, casi infinito, porque la fuerza expresiva está en los personajes. Y nada nos distrae de ellos. "María é maior" bebió de pocoyó en el minimalismo. Porque cuando se trata de niños muy pequeños, sobran los artificios.

Ah, ¿y quién me inspiró los personajes? Muy fácil: la familia del escritor al completo. Cada uno de ellos es un padre, una madre, una sobrina, etc. del propio autor. Y el propio Vázquez Freire aparece en la imagen, de chándal, con una barriga que más bien parece una venganza.

When I got into the illustration proces of "María é maior" (Baía Edicións), by Miguel Vázquez Freire, I decided (as usual) to create a certain atmosphere, an exclusive tone, a sort of DNA. And then a character came to my mind: Pocoyó. It's a Spanish production, whose protagonist is a little boy, together with his close friends, and nearly anything else: no background, very few elements. This is because the characters are the really important element of the story. My book was inspired on its aesthetics, because when something is addressed to kids, everything has to made simple.

oh, and who inspired the characters of the book? Well, very easy: the writer's real famiy (parents, sisters, brothers in law,...). Even the author, Vázquez Freire, is portrayed with a belly which does not speak very well of me!!

De novo no Ensanche - Back at the Ensanche

No marco da exposición que tiven ata hoxe (sábado 3 de maio) no Centro Sociocultural do Ensanche vivín unha experiencia moi interesante hai xa días: un encontro con alumnado de Maxisterio. O tema? O proceso (e os detalles) de creación do álbum infantil ilustrado e o seu potencial como ferramenta didáctica (sobre todo pensando que ía dirixido a futuros mestres). A preparación do tema fíxome cavilar moito, moito, sobre o álbum infantil como obxecto de estudo rigoroso. E dende logo me deixou a boca doce..

Within the exhibition I've had till today (saturday, may 3rd) at Centro Sociocultural O Ensanche (Santiago, Galicia - Spain) I had a very nice experience some days ago: a speech for university students who will become future teachers. The topic? The process of creating a children's album, and (of course) its didactic potential. When I was preparing the speech, I had a long reflection upon children's books as the object of a scientific research... And I really felt like getting into it!!

Encuentro con niños - Encounter with kids

Siempre es un placer pasar por la Nova 33 y hablar de ilustración a los niños (la biblioteca infantil de la Fundación Caixa Galicia en Santiago). Porque son pioneros en Galicia en la biblioteca para niños. Porque es un lugar vivo, con movimiento, con dedicación. Y...qué caray, porque lo saben hacer muy bien. En fin, que yo de mayor quiero tener una biblioteca así.

It's always a pleasure to go to the Nova 33 (a specialized children's library in Santiago, Galicia, belonging to Fundación Caixa Galicia) to talk to children about illustration. It's a pleaseru because they have been actually the first ones in Galicia. An because that pace is alive. And... what the hell, because they do it so well! Definitely, when I grow up I want to have a library like that.

Novos libros - New books

A editorial Baía vai publicar en (moi) breve un par de libros bastante peculiares: tratan de ciencia, non en van foron escritos pola xornalista, bióloga e presentadora da RTVG María Solar (que presenta o programa Ciencia Nosa).

Nos libros existe unha trama de ficción cun transfondo científico, que fai que todo se mesture (polo menos para min, como lector) harmonicamente.

Ademais de ilustrar os dous libros, participei, xunto co meu amigo (e pedagogo, profesor, deseñador e guionista de contidos educativos) Arturo Iglesias, na elaboración de actividades didácticas sobre a historia e todas as ramificacións que pode ter en torno á ciencia.

Sairán pronto, moi pronto...pero aquí van uns avances.

Baía Publishers will soon release a couple of books which are quite peculiar: they deal with science, and the author, María Solar, is a well-known journalist (also biologist), who conducts a program about science on RTVG. The books have a fictional plot based on scientific events, and both are combined wisely. I illustrated both, and also took part (together with my friend Arturo iglesias, teacher, designer and scriptwriter for educational purposes). They will be released soon, very soon... but here you can see some samples.

Tomeime un respiro - I had a short break

Convido aos lectores a asistir á exposición que teño no Centro Sociocultural O Ensanche, en Santiago de Compostela até finais de mes. Nela hai mostras de banda deseñada, ilustración, cartelismo, humor gráfico e material multimedia. organizada pola Universidade de Santiago e o Concello, pretende amosar como unha exposición pode ser un material didáctico en si. E no marco da mesma, haberá diferentes actos: encontros con rapaces, unha charla (o vindeiro martes 22 ás 19:00h) para alumnado universitario, e a presentación do monográfico da Revista Galega de Educación sobre arte e ensino. Aquí vai a invitación.

This is an invitación to my exhibition in Centro Sociocultural O Ensanche, in Santiago de Compostela, until the end of this month. There one can find samples of comic, illustration, multimedia material, graphic humour and posters. Santiago University and Santiago City Hall are the organizers, and it intends to show how an exhibition may be a didatic material itself. Together with it, there are (and will be) encounters with children, also with university students (next Tuesday, 22nd), and the presentation of the monographic issue of Revista Galega de Educación, dealing with both art and education.
